Find out your BMI

BMI or Body Mass Index is the measure used by insurance companies to quickly assess you. Insurance companies want to know the risks that their clients may present, and knowing a person’s BMI is one method.

Below is a tool for you to determine your own BMI. The chart on the right is from the World Health Organization’s (WHO) which recommends body weight based on BMI values for adults. It is used for both men and women, age 18 or older.

The calculation is BMI = Kg/ m^2

Category BMI Range
Severe Thinness
< 16
Moderate Thinness
16 - 17
Mild Thinness
17 - 18.5
Normal
18.5 - 25
Overweight
25 - 30
Obese Class I
30 - 35
Obese Class II

Obese Class III

A high BMI can be an indicator of:

  • High blood pressure
  • Higher levels of LDL cholesterol, which is widely considered “bad cholesterol,”
  • Type II diabetes
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Stroke

A low BMI can be an indicator of:

  • Malnutrition, vitamin deficiencies, anaemia
  • Osteoporosis
  • A decrease in immune function

There are other risk factors which may also be present, this list is not exhaustive.

BMI is widely used not just for personal insurance but for a range of professions and industries.

That said, it is not perfect. It should be used as an indication only. The BMI does not take the body composition into account. For example, people with higher muscle mass may read as being obese, even though their body fat ratio is low.

BMI provides an indication. The index allows people to start a health conversation that could potentially uncover a serve health condition. If you are unsure about your BMI, or what the your index means for you, you should seek professional advice from a qualified health practitioner.

Send us a message or a question about your BMI and how your index may effect your personal insurnace.
